Ministry vows to improve road quality in Latvia

The EUR 334.5 million or 42% of the total funding available to the Ministry of Transport in 2024 will go towards the road infrastructure – construction and maintenance work, security and accessibility improvements, all to ensure quality access to education and medical institutions and promote micro-mobility, as mentioned in the ministry’s statement.
“Our priority is improving road traffic security. We will continue working in this direction. We will look for ways to distribute the available budget towards various activities intended to improve road traffic safety and create a better environment for invalids suffering from mobility problems. In support of the green course, we will continue developing cycling paths to promote safe micro-mobility,” says Latvian Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens.

One of the planned activities to improve road traffic safety is the deployment of average speed monitoring devices on national roads, which is already a reality on 16 roads.

The ministry’s announcement mentions that a lot of attention will be dedicated towards improvement of safety for the least protected road traffic participants through the construction of cycling paths and pedestrian walkways. Construction and maintenance work is planned for various roads to reduce the number of potentially dangerous turns and to exclude the possibility of direct road conflicts.
Next year’s objectives include road construction work, the Administrative Territorial Reform and improvement of accessibility to new administrative centres (education, healthcare and other institutions). Funding of EUR 47 million is reserved in the Recovery Fund for this.
The budget includes funding for the installation of 139 electric recharge stations. This, according to the Ministry of Transport, will help promote sustainable mobility and use of electric cars in the entire country.
The ministry’s budget for the development of the transport sector in 2024 is EUR 788 million.
“We expect next year the planned activities will provide a great contribution to the sector’s priorities – progress towards green course, improvement of security and accessibility, introduction of good management principles and enhancement of international competitiveness,” the ministry notes.
