US pledges USD 522 million to strengthen Ukraine’s energy system

The US Embassy in Ukraine announced on Sunday, the 24th of September, that Ukraine and the US have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide Ukraine with up to USD 522 million to strengthen its energy system, reports Reuters.
The statement said that USD 422 million is marked for immediate energy assistance, and an additional 100 million will be made conditional on the successful implementation of specific measures, including reforms.
Embassy officials said one of the objectives of the MoU is to help Ukraine rebuild critical infrastructure, particularly in response to Russian air strikes on power plants and transformers that caused power shortages last winter.
Despite the extensive repairs, officials have expressed concern about the possibility of new attacks in the upcoming winter season,

in the light of recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.

The MoU also aims to support Ukraine in reforming its energy sector and transitioning to a competitive, low-carbon energy economy in line with European Union requirements, the Embassy said in the statement.
The MoU was announced by the Embassy following the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the US last week. These joint efforts are part of strengthening Ukraine’s resilience and energy security.
