On Wednesday, the 20th of September, the Latvian parliament with 55 votes in favour and 34 votes against elected Union of Greens and Farmers faction Daiga Mieriņa as the new Saeima speaker. The Saeima Praesidium underwent reshuffling and replacements, influenced by the new government.
The other candidate – For Stability! party leader Aleksejs Rosļikovs – received a mere nine votes in favour and 80 votes against from Saeima deputies. 25 deputies [members of the National Alliance and Combined List] voted against the two candidates.
This outcome potentially indicates –
the promise given by Ainārs Šlesers to support Mieriņa was upheld.
Daiga Mieriņa is a Latvian gardener, municipal worker and politician. In the past she served as chairperson of Carnikava County Council and as a deputy of Ādaži County Council after Carnikava administrative territory was liquidated as separate administrative territory. Until now she has served as chairperson of Saeima’s Public Administration and Local Government Committee.
The graduated from Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies with a Bachelor’s degree and gardener profession. She also graduated from Riga Technical University with a Master’s degree in quality management.
