Azerbaijan on Tuesday, the 19th of September, launched “anti-terrorism” operations in Nagorno-Karabakh, a region under Armenian control, which has sparked increased tensions as the area is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan. There have been tragic incidents, including mine explosions and air raid sirens, reports BBC.
The Azerbaijani defence ministry accused Armenian forces of shelling army positions and launched “local, anti-terrorist measures” to ensure the withdrawal of Armenian forces from Azerbaijani territory. They have stated that
they are focusing on military targets, not civilians or civilian objects,
using high-precision weapons.
The Armenian Ministry of Defence has disputed the allegations of Armenian fire. Armenian officials have stated that the situation along its borders was “relatively stable”.
Russia issued a statement calling on both countries to respect the ceasefire signed after the 2020 war.
