Partners of the forming coalition in Latvia – New Unity (JV), Progressive party (PRO) and the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) – met on Tuesday, the 12th of September, and agreed on the government declaration project.
Parties have agreed on specific tasks to be completed by the end of the year. The first task on the list is introducing a mechanism for partial compensation of electricity distribution network tariffs.
The government’s priorities also include the improvement of banks’ competitiveness and solutions for mortgage loan refinancing services to be made more accessible. Coalition parties are also committed to preventing administrative and financial restrictions for clients’ transition between credit institutions and adopting a tax on bank profits.
Coalition partners plan to ratify the Istanbul Convention by the 31st of December 2023.
The declaration includes 39 points and details the main tasks to be completed by the government by the end of the year.
“Latvia is a Latvian, prosperous and inclusive European country that will be sustainably developing during a time of democratic, climate, technological and digital change. […] Freedom, democracy, the rule of law and the Latvian cultural space are the fundamental values of the state, which permeate every decision we make.
By involving society and promoting life-long education, we will achieve equal and fair opportunities for everyone to live a dignified life in Latvia and accomplish their goals,” the goals listed in the declaration mention.
Additionally, the new government wants to establish couples’ cohabitation regulations and develop a sustainable education financing model.
Coalition partners plan to sign government-formation agreements in the Saeima on Friday, the 15th of September.
