Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda believes that with support from the European Commission it is necessary to look for solutions that would allow using Baltic Sea ports to export Ukrainian grains.
“Our duty is helping Ukraine to export grains using Baltic Sea ports. With help from EC, we have have to find administrative, financial and infrastructure solutions to use opportunities offered by Baltic Sea ports and carriers,” he said at a press-conference in Vilnius after meeting with Executive Vice-President and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.
In his interview to BNS, Dombrovskis said the EC is currently looking for ways to reduce transportation costs of Ukrainian grains and solve various procedural or infrastructure problems.
According to him, the topic of subsidies for the transportation of grains using Klaipeda and other European ports are not considered in Brussels.
“Instead we are looking for ways to reduce transportation costs, as well as perform administrative or infrastructure improvements,” said Dombrovskis.
According to him, the EC supports Lithuania’s proposal to transfer customs formalities, phytosanitary checks and other procedures from the Ukrainian-Polish border to EU ports, such as Klaipeda.
