Politologist says Latvia’s new government may be composed without National Alliance and Progressive Party

Evika Siliņa, who is the prime minister candidate nominated by Latvia’s president, could potentially compose a capable government without the National Alliance (NA) or the Progressive Party (PRO), said politologist and public relations specialist Filips Rajevskis in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
According to his estimates,

a coalition consisting of New Unity (JV), Combined List (AS) and Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) would have 57 votes in the Saeima,

which means three votes more than the current coalition.
Rajevskis said Siliņa faces very strong opposition in the government creation process. Nevertheless, the expert admits she has already made it far in this process, because JV is in a situation when the party can say a confident “no” to NA and PRO.

The politologist believes a three-partner coalition without the two aforementioned parties would be able to resolve many economy-related problems quickly and without unnecessary conflicts.

“These ideological emotions coming from PRO and NA are exactly that could impede labour affairs on one side and human rights on the other,” said the expert.
He predicts Siliņa will need at least two weeks to prepare her proposal for a new government before she can present it to the president.
As previously reported, Latvia’s president nominated JV member Evika Siliņa as the prime minister candidate, entrusting to her the creation of a new government.
The board of Siliņa’s party New Unity met to discuss which of the two parties – National Alliance or Progressive Party – would make the best coalition partner.
