Programme: trade union believes teachers’ rights should be strengthened

Teachers do not have the right to inspect students even if there are suspicions of any banned items of substances being brought to school. This is because there are people’s right to privacy. This needs to change, said chairperson of the Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Workers (LIZDA) Inga Vanaga in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
The trade union proposes updating the internal rules of procedure in schools. Vanaga said it was concluded in meetings of the work group that the rights of the management of education institutions should be enhanced just like those of workers of law enforcement institutions.

Parents should also listen to teachers more often, said Vanaga.

According to information from the trade union, there are situations when parents subject teachers to emotional violence. This is one of the reasons why teachers leave their jobs.
“This needs to change on a school and national level,” said the head of LIZDA.
