On Monday, the 14th of August 2023, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) announced that he will resign as Prime Minister.
He revealed that he would be presenting a formal resignation letter to the President of Latvia on Thursday the 17th of August. Additionally, he stated that he will not be heading the forthcoming Cabinet.
Kariņš’s resignation marks the collapse of the entire Cabinet, creating an opportunity for the emergence of a new government
centred around Jaunā Vienotība (New Unity), ZZS (Union of Greens and Farmers), and Progesīvie (Progressive party) as its potential central components.
Kariņš decision to remain in office while initiating negotiations for a new government has spiked an argument with the present coalition partners, Nacionālā apvienība (National Alliance All for Latvia) and Apvienotā Savienība (United List).
They stress that this action is seen as a violation of the constitution.
