Head of SRS: Tax laws should be rewritten in a language that citizens can easily understand

Tax laws should be rewritten in a language that citizens can easily understand, said Director General of the State Revenue Service (VID) Ieva Jaunzeme, in an interview with Latvian Television (LTV) programme Rīta panorāma on Monday, the 14th of August.
“The tax law should be such that it can be understood,” the head of VID stressed, adding that there are countries where laws are rewritten in “easy language” so that everyone can understand them.

She stressed that tax laws should be the first to be rewritten in easy-to-understand language.

Jaunzeme also mentioned that the VID already tries to present laws in a simpler way, including methods and advice, but it is not always successful.
“This is a work in progress and needs improvement, so that the tax laws can be understood by anyone who is not experienced in finances,” said Jaunzeme.

It has already been reported that the term of office of Ieva Jaunzeme as the head of the VID ends on the 11th of February 2024.

On the 8th of August 2023, the Government decided not to extend Jaunzeme’s term of office and to terminate her employment as of the 12th of February 2024, considering Jaunzeme’s application to terminate her civil service at the end of her term of office.
