The Combined List (AS) and National Alliance (NA) political parties may be sceptical about at least part of the suggestion from Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš regarding the possible rotation of ministers.
Currently it is unknown if the two parties could agree to the suggested rotation of ministers and parties’ spheres of influence.
If the two parties do not agree with a significant portion of the PM’s presented plan, both public and unofficial opinions suggest,
Kariņš may decide to step down in the end in order to open the way for a new government with the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) and Progressive Party (PP).
If the situation truly reaches the point of resignation, it is unknown on which day it might happen.
The situation could be affected by both the announcements from parties and planned discussions.
Previously it was reported that parties forming the coalition – NA and AS – have agreed on a shared position towards Kariņš’s proposed rotation.
Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltēns told journalists that parties have a clear position and a coordinated message, which the politician did not reveal.
The two parties plan to present their vision at a joint briefing on Friday, the 11th of August. The briefing will commence shortly before the parties’ meeting with Kariņš – in the government building at 08:50 a.m. (local time).
New Unity plans to meet with AS and NA representatives on Friday as well. Kariņš expects the two parties to give their answer to his proposed rotation of ministers and memorandum priorities.
To make the government function more dynamically, Kariņš suggested making NA politician Rigard Kols Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, giving AS the Ministry of Economy and JV – the Ministry of Environment Protection and Regional Development.
He also wants JV to take over the post of chairman of Saeima’s National Security Committee from NA.
The prime minister wants coalition parties to reach an agreement on the healthcare networks, education quality and the school network by the end of 2023. Other topics that need agreeing on include solutions for eliminating labor force shortages without compromising the development of the nation-state, and to make the necessary decisions on the development of the capital market with the involvement of large state-owned enterprises.
If NA and AS refuse this offer, the PM may reach out to ZZS and PP as potential as potential coalition partners.
