Belarusian security services still maintain their activities on the border, said the Chief of Latvian State Border Guard Guntis Pujāts in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
“Belarusian services do not reduce their activities, quite the opposite – they are actively involved in damaging Latvia’s infrastructure to ensure the illegal entry of migrants to the country,” said Pujāts.
He said the have been reports and signals that someone wants to escalate the situation.
“Currently we can see migrants want to avoid getting caught. Migrant traffickers have become active,” said Pujāts.
Previously it was reported that this year there are already 50 ongoing criminal processes regarding the organisation of illegal migration to Latvia. Last year there were 20 such cases.
It is also reported that this year Daugavpils City Court sentenced Ukrainian citizens to real prison sentences for attempts to bring in illegal migrants to Latvia.
