Because the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted Latgale the most, since people there vaccinate the least, all of Latvia should get involved to assist the region to overcome the crisis, said Latvia’s President Egils Levits in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
He believes the government should keep its promise lift the lockdown 15 November, allow vaccinated residents to receive services under green regime but maintain tight restrictions for non-vaccinated residents. However, the president believes it is necessary to consider imposing separate restrictions for administrative territories in which Covid-19 infection rates are the highest.
Levits admits the situation is the most severe in Latgale, and it is the low vaccination coverage that is to blame.
However, this situation is not a problem for just Latgale – it is Latvia’s problem.
«This means other Latvian municipalities should provide assistance to Latgale. It is national solidarity. We should share experience and efforts to battle this pandemic,» said Latvia’s president.

The president also believes that once the curfew is lifted, the government should organize a meeting in Latgale in order to discuss the problems unique to the region and possible solutions to the Covid-19 crisis together with local leaders.
At the same time, the president also invites the government to announce clear and comprehensive criteria at which Covid-19 restrictions may be tightened or lifted so that residents do not stick to the belief that the ‘government makes last-second decisions’.
The president believes Latvia will overcome Covid-19 pandemic if the absolute majority of the population vaccinate.
