Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda has invited his Latvian colleague Edgars Rinkēvičs to speed up the synchronisation of his country’s power network with continental Europe.
“I invite the president to speed up synchronisation with networks of continental Europe,” Nausėda told journalists after meeting with his Latvian colleague, stressing that a complete disconnection from Russian and Belarusian networks is a common goal of Baltic states and should be completed as quickly as possible.
Lithuania plans to disconnect from BRELL, in which Baltic States are connected to Russia and Belarus, next year.
Nausėda said it would be more convenient to desynchronise together with Latvia.
“Exit [from BRELL] is possible starting with next year, but I also recognise that it would be best for us to do it together from a shared position. If I understand correctly, Latvia’s position on this is postponing de-synchronisation by one year until the start of 2025,” said the Lithuanian president.
He added that synchronisation with continental Europe will be the topic of the next meeting of the Lithuanian National Security Council.
The decision on de-synchronisation from Russian power network will need to be made in August. The agreement involving the Baltic States, Belarus and Russia on the so-called BRELL circle stipulates that the agreement is automatically extended every year in February if none of the signatories announce by the 7th of August or half a year before the expiry of the current agreement decision to withdraw from further participation. If Lithuania fails to do so now, the country will not be able to withdraw from BRELL until 2025.
