Vilnis Ķirsis may be appointed as acting mayor of Riga

On Wednesday, the 5th of July, an extraordinary meeting of Riga City Council was called. During this meeting it is planned to appoint vice-mayor Vilnis Ķirsis as the acting mayor of Riga.
There are two topics on the meeting’s agenda – the appointment of a replacement of the mayor of Riga and the replacement of the head of the investigative committee tasked with looking into the possible violations in the city council’s Transport Department.

Vice-chairman of Riga City Council Linda Ozola invites the city council to appoint Ķirsis as the acting chairman until a new one is elected.

Ķirsis, on the other hand, suggests amending the decision made at the previous meeting of the city council and elect a representative of the Legal Affairs Office as the head of the committee tasked with investigating the disciplinary case against Transport Department officials.
As it is known, after the conflict surrounding the evaluation of work done by the Transport Department, the ruling coalition of Riga City Council split apart. On top of that, Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis announced his decision to step down amid this crisis.
