Following wide discussions and evaluation of the situation in the agriculture sector, the board of Latvian Farmers Union (LZS) decided on Monday, the 3rd of July, to invite the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) to decide on requesting the dismissal of Minister of Agriculture Didzis Šmits.
On Tuesday, the 4th of July, ZZS will hold a meeting to discuss this request.
According to LZS, inaction in the middle of efforts to limit the rapid growth of food prices is unacceptable.
In a year’s time, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSP), food prices in Latvia have increased by 39.2%, for bread and cereals prices have increased by 49.1%, and the prices of milk, cheese and eggs have increased by 40.6%.
So far Šmits has not presented any reasonable offer to reduce ongoing food price drop, stresses the board of LZS.
Previously ZZS Saeima faction had made numerous requests for discussions in the parliament about a possible reduction of VAT on food products to help support residents.
