Latvia’s Saeima has passed in the final reading the Law on the Creation of Selija Military Field. This law will provide the legal framework for the determination of the limits of the new military field, procedures for the alienation of real estate located within the planned limits of the future military field, its use and establishment of necessary infrastructure.
The legislative draft provides for granting Sēlija military field the status of object of national interests.
Additionally, the Saeima passed in the second and final reading legislative drafts associated with this law and intended to govern and assist with the development of infrastructure of the military field.
It is planned that state and local government institutions, as well as other institutions, will have to be examine all submissions and issues related to the construction of the military landfill infrastructure and the provision and performance of related works and make decisions in the shortest possible time.
Latvian Ministry of Defence is planned to be granted rights to commence construction-related preparation once the decision regarding appropriate property alienation compensation has been made.
The law states the Cabinet of Ministers is to issue regulations for the creation of a military field by the 11th of July, as well as set the borders of this military location, real estate property part of it, as well as real estate that will need to be cleared to make way for military infrastructure.
Law on the Creation of Selija Military Field will come into force the day after its promulgation.
