Edgars Rinkēvičs to give his solemn oath as President of Latvia on the 8th of July

Latvia’s newly-elected President Edgars Rinkēvičs will give his solemn vow in the Saeima during an extraordinary meeting on the 8th of July, as decided by the Saeima Praesidium.
With Rinkēvičs becoming the new President of Latvia, the term ends for Egils Levits.
In accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia, when taking the post of President, the individual is to speak the following oath:
“I, upon assuming the duties of a Member of the Saeima, before the people of Latvia, do swear (solemnly promise) to be loyal to Latvia, to strengthen its sovereignty and the Latvian language as the only official language, to defend Latvia as an independent and democratic State, and to fulfill my duties honestly and conscientiously. I undertake to observe the Constitution and laws of Latvia.”

On the 31st of May Latvia’s Saeima voted for Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs as the next president of Latvia. 52 deputies voted in his favour.

There were three candidates in total: Uldis Pīlēns, Edgars Rinkēvičs and Elīna Pinto.
