Latvia’s Levits doesn’t want votes from non-Latvian political parties

When asked if he plans to run for president again, Latvian President Egils Levits said he does not want support from parties that are not Latvian or western-focused.
In an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma, Levits did not say if he wants to run in presidential elections again. He also said nothing if his candidacy is currently considered by political parties or if any parties have approached him about his possible candidacy.
“Parties are currently composing their thoughts. It is the parties’ objective to reach out to their candidates.

Candidates are planned to be announced in the second half of April. Right now politicians are consolidating their thoughts,” said the president.

Levits said if parties consider it necessary, he “will definitely reconsider running as presidential candidate again”.
Nevertheless, he has his own preference for support.

“I wouldn’t want to be elected with votes from parties that are not Western and Latvian Latvia-focused,” he explained.

He also added that he would definitely not want to see votes from these parties among those who could potentially vote for him.

Previously it was reported that the election of Latvia’s President is scheduled to take place in the Saeima on the 31st of May.

The date was agreed upon by the Saeima Praesidium and Factions Council.
Levits did not say if he has decided to run in elections. He said the rest depends on Saeima politicians.
There are backstage talks in the Saeima that the Combined List political party may pick Uldis Pīlēns as their presidential candidate. He was previously the party’s prime minister candidate. His decision to run in presidential elections depends on whether Pīlēns decides to run for president. Until the situation is clear, Levits remains evasive about his plans.
