Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Poland could form a coalition of Western countries that supply Kyiv with aircraft while the Ukrainians continue to defend Bakhmut, writes Reuters.
During a visit to Warsaw on Wednesday, the 5th of April, Zelensky said that Poland played a special role in getting the tanks to Ukraine, and he believes that it could play the same role in facilitating the transfer of fighters to Kyiv. So far, no agreement has been reached on transferring more modern fighter jets, such as the F-16, to Ukraine.
Zelenskyi said that the situation at the front is still very difficult, especially in Bakhmut. He rejected what the Russians said that the city was captured and said: “We are in Bakhmut and the enemy does not control it.
For me, the most important is not to lose our soldiers,
and of course, if there is a moment of even hotter events and the danger we could lose our personnel because of encirclement – of course the corresponding correct decisions will be taken by generals there.”
The bloody battles around Bakhmut are the heaviest and longest during the Russian invasion. Ukrainian military officials have emphasized the importance of Bakhmut.
In its latest report, the US Institute for the Study of War stated that mercenaries from Wagner’s group are likely to try to consolidate their control in the center of the city and will continue to advance westward.
French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are expected to discuss issues related to the war in Ukraine with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, the 6th of April. Before the visit, Macron and US President Joe Biden agreed by phone that Beijing should be involved in finding a solution to end the war in Ukraine.
Beijing denies US and NATO concerns that it could supply Russia with weapons. China has called for a ceasefire and described its position as neutral.
Polish President Andrzej Duda has indicated that Warsaw is working so that additional security guarantees for Ukraine can be approved at the NATO summit in Vilnius. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Moscow should maintain relations with Washington even if American arms supplies to Ukraine mean being in a really tense phase of the war.
