Latvian PM: State Revenue Service should turn to taxpayers with a friendly face

The State Revenue Service (VID) must oppose illegalities. At the same time, the institution should turn to honest taxpayers with a friendly face, said Latvia’s Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš in an interview to TV3 programme 900 seconds.
Looking at VID and the criticisms directed at the institution’s management, Kariņš stressed it is necessary to decide the objective of VID’s operations and possible changes. According to him, the main objective is improving VID’s basic functions.
«VID needs to oppose illegalities, but also welcome businesses with a friendly face. VID should become friendlier towards the people who pay taxes and remain intolerant towards its workers potentially involved in illegalities. VID needs to continue internal cleansing processes,» said the head of the government.
Previously the Combined List political party asked the Minister of Finance Arvils Ašeradens to replace the head of VID and start working on VID reforms.
In order to ensure VID functions efficiently and is able to secure a breakthrough for the development of the national economy, the party invites the minister to replace VID chief Ieva Jaunzeme and include VID reforms to the agenda of the Tax Policy Group.
