Agricultural product price level up 33.9% in Latvia last year

The Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia reports that, when compared with 2021, the agricultural price index increased by 33.9% in 2022. It was largely affected by the growth of the livestock product price index by 41.7% and the increase of crop price index by 29.3%.
The crop price index was affected the most in 2022 by the grain price index growth of 37.1%. This includes increase of 56.2% for rye, 44.2% for barley, 65% for oats. The increase of wheat was lower – by 34.9%. For potatoes the increase was 32.7%.
The livestock product price level was affected by the increase of fresh milk price index of 48.7%, the increase of the price index of eggs by 48.0% and the increase of meat product price index of 30.1% (40.6% for cattle and 34.2% for pigs). A smaller price index growth was observed for sheep and goats (20.4%), domestic fowl (18.0%) and broiler (17.9%).

Last year the biggest price increase in crops was observed for grains, potatoes and legumes.

The average procurement price of grains increased by 41.3% in 2022 – from 196.84 EUR/t in 2021 to 278.10 EUR/t.
A significant increase of prices was observed for potatoes and legumes – 44.1% and 36.3% respectively. The average potato procurement price increased to 91.43 EUR/t when compared with 2021. The average procurement price of colza seeds increased to 565.63 EUR/t in 2022.
Compared with 2022, prices have increased for all vegetable group: carrots (+26.7%), onions (+19.1%), cabbages (+14.0%), tomatoes (+11.5%), cucumbers (+7.6%). Prices of vegetables were affected by volume, cost of production, quality and volume of sales.

In the livestock sector the biggest price increase was for fresh cow milk,

which was 48.2%. The price increased from 318.01 EUR/t in 2021 to 471.19 EUR/t in 2022. A significant price increase was also observed for livestock meat – to 874.60 EUR/t (40.7%). The average pork procurement price grew to 414.22 EUR/t or 31.8%.
The average egg procurement price, when compared with the year prior, increased by 42.2% – from 7.18 EUR per 100 eggs in 2021 to 10.21 EUR per 100 eggs in 2022, as reported by CSP.
