At the European Parliament elections, which are expected in a year, all ballots will be counted manually without scanning, said the chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CVK) Kristīne Saulīte after her meeting with Latvian President Egils Levits on Monday, the 3rd of April.
According to Saulīte, the most important aspect of organisation of elections is ensuring voters’ rights are respected, so that voters are able to vote at any available election site. This is why state institutions will continue talks about the implementation of an electronic online voter register.
The other information technology system – Election Management System – was not developed for EP elections and it will not be available by the time elections come. Because of this reason it is planned to determine EP elections by counting submitted ballots manually, said the head of CVK.
The Election Management System is ready for municipal elections. There is still time to prepare for the next municipal and Saeima elections.
As previously reported, to ensure operations of another system – electronic online register of voters – to ensure voters are able to cast votes at any election site during EP elections, CVK and the State Chancellery will continue discussions with the National Regional Development Agency and Latvian State Radio and Television Centre this week, said Saulīte.
