Moscow has called on the UN countries to vote against the «unbalanced and anti-Russian» resolution proposed by Ukraine and other countries, which foresees Russia’s withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine, writes Reuters.
193 UN member states are to vote this week on a draft resolution demanding comprehensive, just, and lasting peace on the territory of Ukraine. Ukraine and its allies hope to win the support of at least a third of the countries in the UN General Assembly.
The resolutions of the General Assembly are not binding, but they have political force.
In a letter to the UN on Monday, the 20th of February, Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, wrote: «Even the eventual cessation of hostilities without a clear incentive for meaningful negotiations as well as rectifying the issues that lead to the crisis will not bring a long-lasting solution. If the text remains unbalanced and anti-Russian as it is now we ask Member States to vote against it.»
The peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for the full restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and requires Russia to recognize it under the UN Charter.
Zelensky stated that this point is not negotiable. The complete withdrawal of the army and the suspension of hostilities are also demanded.
Western countries have already delivered arms shipments worth billions to Ukraine. The US accuses Iran and North Korea of arming Russia, and on the 18th of February expressed concern that China could help the aggressor country with weapons. China has responded that the US is not in a position to make demands on Beijing. China’s ambassador to the UN has informed that China will prepare a document in the coming days in which it will express its position regarding the war in Ukraine. He also stated that China respects the territorial integrity of each country.
