Latvian Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, stressing that churches and other religious organisations are very important in a democratic society in maintaining dialogue on various topics, believes that often the instrumental disinformation from churches about international law documents causes evil.
«If we look at Europe, Latvia stands out in the sense that
religious organisations in the country are in opposition in topics in which other countries maintain a dialogue
and look for solutions,» said the minister. She explained: the problem is not that churches should not be involved.
It is exactly the opposite – every opportunity for society to unite and look for solutions together based on values is very good. The problem is the churches’ instrumental disinformation about specific international law documents like the Istanbul convention causes great evil.
«The convention intended to protect the least protected members of society is being demonised and used as part of some kind of Kremlin propaganda,» said the minister.
According to her, the biggest problem is that critical thinking is often the Achilles’ heel, and while there were some bubbles on social media in the context of Covid-19, now there are major bubbles in the context of religious organisations.
