Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine security services across Europe have been increasingly paying attention to people suspected of spying for Moscow, writes Politico.
Slovenian media reported on Sunday, the 29th of January, that two persons were detained in December for espionage for Russia. The two suspects, who are nationals of an unnamed South American country, used false identities related to the real estate market and the sale of antiques. According to the police report, the persons were detained on the 5th of December, 2022.
The Ljubljana Prosecutor’s Office told Slovenian media Siol: «The District Prosecutor’s Office received a report from the Slovenian Intelligence and Security Agency and based on it, a pre-trial investigation has been launched.»
The prosecutor’s office said an investigation was underway but did not confirm the charges.
The Intelligence and Security Agency of Slovenia implemented the operation to arrest the spies together with other Slovenian security agencies, as the available information indicated that espionage was also carried out outside Slovenia. Germany has also recently made two arrests in connection with espionage and passing information to Russia.
