Saeima speaker says Latvia may employ Kyiv Digital civil protection system

It is possible Latvia may use Ukrainian-made digital civil protection system, which has already received international recognition, said 14th Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltēns in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma on Tuesday, the 24th of January.
He said he has discussed this topic with Ukrainian officials during his visit of the war-torn country. According to the parliament’s speaker, Latvia doesn’t need to invest millions to improve its civil protection system, which is outdated. Instead it would be a better idea to use already existing and working systems.
When he was in Ukraine, Kyiv’s mayor and vice mayor told Smiltēns that

Kyiv is prepared to gift «the best system that exists» to Latvia.

«This is high praise of the support we have provided to Ukraine so far,» said the politician.
According to the Saeima speaker, Kyiv Digital is a civil protection system with a mobile app warning system that informs residents of incoming missile attacks, provides information about nearby shelters and other useful information. It also works in a blackout.
Smiltēns said

talks about the system’s adoption are already underway.

He did not say when the final decision could be made.
Lately there has been much talk about the need for Latvia to improve its existing civil protection system. Latvian Minister of the Interior Māris Kučinskis has made it one of his priorities.
