Last year Riga City Vidzeme Suburb Court sentenced one to a suspended two-year prison sentence with probation period and community service for distribution of materials glorifying terrorism. Now this ruling has come to force.
According to available information, the name of this man is Rihards Daugavietis. The court decided to sentence him to a suspended prison sentence with one year of probation and 150 hours of community service. According to the prosecution office, the accused was engaged in distribution of materials that promote and teach terrorism (terrorist training).
According to the prosecution, the man, in an attempt to commit and promote terrorism, used various internet resources to look for information about methods and tools employed in terror acts. Materials that glorified and invited others to engage in terrorist activities, as well as provided detailed information on the creation of various terrorist tools and weapons, were stored by the accused on a data storage device. Files had various titles, including: starting a fire at night, Lord’s trial, Russia to become Russian again when blood of non-russians will flow, etc.
This way the accused received much knowledge about preparation of explosives, firearms, hazardous substances and other dangerous items, as well as practical knowledge in how to commit terror attacks.
The accused also recorded a video in which he invited others to commit terror attacks,
stressing that he intends to commit a mass shooting in a synagogue. He also invited others to do the same. Using Telegram social network, he sent the video to other users.
Daugavietis previously admitted his guilt in court. He also said that as patriot of Latvia, he was inspired with radical ideas after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. These ideas, according to him, were aimed to assist with Latvia’s security, not against it, because he believes this knowledge would be useful when defending Latvia against Russian aggression – in various diversions against the aggressor. He stressed that he has changed his mind since then and has reconsidered his actions. He also promised to do all he can to avoid sitting on the bench of the accused in court.
