Latvian Saeima committee approves criminal prosecution of lying deputy

On Wednesday, the 28th of December, Saeima’s Mandates, Ethics and Submissions Committee unanimously decided to ask the parliament to permit criminal prosecution of 14th Saeima deputy Glorija Grevcova (For Stability!).
The parliamentarian’s defence attorney said there were no victims as a result of Grevcova’s actions. This is why, according to him, there is no reason to continue criminal prosecution. Grevcova said mass media have made her into «the country’s biggest criminal», which turned attention away from «real problems». She also added that today charges are addressed to her, but tomorrow other deputies may experience the same. The committee’s chairman Jānis Vucāns said false information could have affected election results because voters usually look up information about potential deputies before casting votes. Parliamentarian Gunārs Kūtris said he is confused how a person can accidentally write the name of an education institution in which he or she did not study.

The Saeima will make the final decisions in this matter.

Currently the parliament is in the middle of an inter-session break. The closest Saeima meeting may take place on the 12th of January 2023. However, it is possible the parliament may announce an extraordinary meeting.
As previously reported, the prosecutor in charge of the case requested the court to put Grevcova’s criminal case, in which she is accused of stating false information to the Central Election Commission, on hold in order to ask the Saeima’s permission to continue criminal prosecution. Grevcova was presented with a security measure that does not involve deprivation of freedom. She is not allowed to change residence without informing authorities or leave the country.
