Latvian Ministry of Defence reports that police in Kosovo have opened an investigation of an incident that involved Latvian contingent of troops during a patrol in Kosovo on the 25th of December.
Shots were fired in the direction of Latvian troops. No injuries reported. An inspection of vehicles back at the base showed none of them were damaged. It is possible the shots were fired to disrupt the patrol. The Military Police Unit part of the peacekeeping contingent participates in the investigation together with Kosovo police.
A light infantry company from Latvia participates in the peacekeeping operation in Kosovo as part of a US-led multinational battalion.
The mission performs patrols, defence, maintenance of combat capabilities, as well as rapid response objectives. (The exact number of troops stationed there, while not mentioned here, normally starts at 75 people – BNN).
Latvian National Armed Forces, according to the order issued by the Saeima on the 3rd of September 2020, will continue participating in the NATO operation in Kosovo until the 31st of December 2023.
