Progressive Party in Latvia will continue working with public organisations to make sure the Civil Union Law is adopted in Latvia, said the leader of this party’s Saeima faction Kaspars Briškens in an interview to TV3 programme 900 seconds on Wednesday, the 21st of December.
He said last Thursday, when members of the parliament once again refused to continue the work commenced by the 13th Saeima in regards to the Civil Union Law, was a «sad day» for Latvia’s democracy and rule of law. He reminded that Latvia is a «rare country» in Europe that still does not have legislation that governs civil unions.
«All this casts a shadow over Latvia’s international reputation,» said the politician.
As for the actions his party plans to take, Briškens promised Progressive party together with public organisations will continue working in order to make sure Latvia adopts the Civil Union Law. He also said it is necessary to work in order to promote public awareness of the need for such a law.
When asked if there is a possibility of the 14th Saeima passing the law, Briškens said his party is prepared to «sit at the discussion table». At the same time, however, he said there is no room for compromises, as this is a human rights issue.
