Lithuania is creating a new strategy to fight disinformation

Specialists from Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine have studied Russian disinformation techniques during the war and warn that countries must coordinate actions to fight propaganda, Lithuanian public media LRT writes.
The Lithuanian government plans to create a center that will fight Kremlin propaganda. At the moment, the Russian media is focusing attention on the demolition of Soviet monuments and monuments, which supposedly prove that the Baltic states are fascist. When the Vilnius municipality demolished the monument to Soviet soldiers of World War II, local activists filed a complaint with the UN Human Rights Committee. The complainants are linked to former politician Algirdas Palecki, who is currently in prison for spying for Russia.
Rūta Juknevičiūtė, a journalist of the LRT LRT Investigation Team, states that the filing of the complaint was organized by Moscow and persons working for it.

«There is a propaganda portal that unites activists from different countries who support the Kremlin. It has even appeared with templates, letters, and calls to bombard the authorities with complaints about the demolition of Soviet monuments.

There were even offers to help write and translate the texts into English and French. What happened? We have seen, in the case of Lithuania, that supporters of Paleckis have filed a complaint with the UN Committee,» explained Juknevičiute.
Analyst Lukas Andriukaitis pointed out that Russian propaganda is able to skillfully adapt and find the most advantageous topic for it at that time.
For the fight against disinformation, it is recommended to create a special center that works in Lithuania, and coordinates cooperation regionally and internationally. The center will be created next year and will bring together professionals from different fields.
The head of Debunk.org, Viktoras Daukšas, stated that Russia has created a chain of fake accounts on social networks. These are profiles used to promote fake news pages.
According to the researchers’ results, the main themes used by Moscow are the idea that Lithuania is a dysfunctional country, that Lithuania’s foreign policy is harming it, that the government is unstable and incompetent, and that Lithuania is manipulating NATO and the European Union to undermine Russia.
