Daugavpils Olympic Outdoor Skating rink’s roof collapses after intense snowfall

In the morning on the 12th of December the roof of the Olympic Outdoor Skating rink in Daugavpils collapsed under the weight of accumulated snow, as confirmed by the city council.
No one was injured and the skating rink remains intact.
It was originally planned to open the skating rink on Saturday, the 10th of December. However, due to forecasts of intense snowfall, it was decided to postpone the opening until Monday, explained Daugavpils Olympic Centre’s board member Vladimirs Šteinbergs.
According to reports, there was approximately half a metre of snow on the roof.

«We wanted to start clearing the snow at around 09:00 a.m., but about an hour before then the tent roof, which was made from plastic, collapsed under the weight of all the snow,» added Šteinbergs.

It is planned to reopen the skating rink once the roof is repaired.
«Repairs will take two or three days. Losses aren’t high. What’s most important is that no one was hurt,» said the manager of the Olympic Centre.
