In his interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma on Wednesday, 30 November, Latvia’s Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš mentioned it may be necessary to separate power supply company Sadales tīkls from electricity producer Latvenergo.
The PM said – by dividing the energy monopoly it was possible to separate Augstsprieguma tīkls from it, but Latvenergo and Sadales tīkls remain closely tied together. Kariņš believes it is possible it may be necessary to reorganise this concern as well, because Latvenergo as a producer of energy is less interested in competition.
Sadales tīkls should be focused on providing services to as many energy producers as possible.
«I am publicly suggesting this as an opportunity for experts to analyse if the company is in need of restructuring,» the head of the government said in his interview. Kariņš stressed that possible restructuring is definitely not a short-term issue, because it needs to be considered very carefully. It is necessary to ensure in a short-term perspective that there is no rapid tariff increase Latvia’s economy may not be able to handle.
