Europe is our space of security, said Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV), greeting citizens on Europe Day.
She reminded that today marks 75 years since the Schuman Declaration, delivered by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, which laid the foundation for the modern European Union. According to Siliņa, its core principles remain unchanged – to promote peace and solidarity in Europe.
The Prime Minister emphasized her belief in the European idea – strong, united, and based on shared values. “I believe in a Europe where human life, freedom, and international law are enduring values,” she stated.
Siliņa also expressed pride in Latvia’s achievements and its influence within Europe.
President Edgars Rinkēvičs also extended greetings to the public on Europe Day, emphasizing that a secure and strong European Union, capable of meeting various challenges, is in Latvia’s best interests.
He added that it is our collective duty and responsibility to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and on its path toward EU membership.
As previously reported by LETA, Europe Day is celebrated annually on the 9th of May in Latvia and across Europe.
