47 teachers in Riga and other parts of Latvia don’t know state language – problem continues

This school year, 32 out of 47 teachers with insufficient state language skills continued teaching children in education institutions in Riga, as reported by State Education Quality Service (IKVD).

By the end of December, the State Language Center found insufficient knowledge of the official language in 20 educational institutions. 16 of them were general education institutions, three sports schools and one children’s and youth interest education institution.

The largest number of teachers with insufficient knowledge of the official language is still found in Riga – 32 teachers. In Ventspils, there were four teachers, in Rezekne municipality and Liepaja – three teachers, in Augdaugava municipality – two teachers, but one teacher was found in Daugavpils, Rezekne and Salaspils municipality.

Of the 47 teachers with insufficient knowledge of the official language, 15 are dismissed from work, 14 are suspended, but another 18 teachers are in a temporary disability.

This is the second school year when the learning process in pre-school and primary education is gradually being implemented only in the state language – 2nd, 5th and 8th grade pupils have also joined 7th grade pupils. From the 1st of September, 2025, the 3rd, 6th and 9th grade pupils will also undergo teaching only Latvian.
