During the first meeting of the 14th Saeima members of the parliament elected the new Praesidium.
The Saeima’s Praesidium traditionally consists of the Saeima speaker, two vice-speakers, Saeima secretary and his assistant.
There were two candidates for the post of Saeima speaker – Edvards Smiltēns from the Combined List (AS) and Aleksejs Rosļikovs from For Stability! (S!).
Smiltēns was elected in the end. 82 Saeima deputies voted for him and 11 voted against.
Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica from New Unity (JV) was elected as as vice-speaker. 87 deputies voted for her and 11 voted against.
Jānis Grasbergs was elected as the second vice-speaker. 86 deputies voted for him and 12 voted against.
Armands Krauze from the Union of Greens and Farmers was elected as Saeima’s secretary. He received 87 votes in favour and 12 against.
Antoņina Ņenaševa was elected as assistant secretary. 79 deputies voted for her and 19 voted against.
Members of the Saeima Praesidium determine the order of work in the parliament, submits reports and drives all the topics in accordance with the parliament’s internal procedure, composes the Saeima’s agenda, meets with foreign officials and performs other important duties.
